The place where it all began
It was a dark and stormy Nuit Blanche in the year 2011. Our hero had returned from the valley of the silicon to find that his ex had moved on, for good reason. In a fit of maturity, he produced an artistic creation insinuating a similarity of form and function between her sexually inexperienced new beau and a hiterto unknown species of rodent: the Virgin LOLHamster. When his creation fell short of his expectations and received only ten out of an expected million Facebook Likes, he decided to attend an art party, where he was offered some unusual mushrooms. Partaking in the sacrament, he soon heard a voice. The voice of Mark Zuckerberg. "Be the future you wish to create". And then it became clear. The solution to his romantic woes was to create an app that let you create a TV station with the YouTube songs and videos that really expressed who you were - and to hook it up with Facebook so your friends, their friends, and their friends would know what you were broadcasting, resulting in an online music / video party where you met through friends... And a killer app that would grow virally until it was worth billions, without the need to spend a dime on marketing. 3 weeks without sleep, an investment of $750, and the free labor of friends who believed and were willing to work for stock only brought this unprecedented innovation to life. Instead of pondering why it failed to reach its targets, we should really marvel at its successes. He met a young lady on opening night who became his common law wife for the next 3 years, and they met thru his ex - via the viral mechanisms he had put in place. During the courtship he utilized the services of an artist who had put her Paintings to music and created an interactive art gallery, and had a watercolour digitally shipped to him which he printed and gave to the lady as a gift. This ushered in a social commerce gold rush, raising $15k from a local investor. 3 short months later, there were 2000 streaming channels, many done by original artists and musicians, and they ran off to San Francisco to take things to the next level. Another $100k was raised, the site grew to 15,000 channels, live streaming was launched, and ibroadcast was voted best startup of 2012 at a top demo event, beating Reddit and Waze. Pure bad luck with a disloyal hire and an unscrupulous investor caused a temporary downfall, until the resurrection in Ottawa as iBroadcast PRIME. With new funding and a premium features option for hd streaming, ibtv prime became a global online concert destination featuring multiple shows and festivals each week from all over North America and Europe. Sadly the funding wasn't quit enough due to the previous issues, combined with the shift in the market to mobile, which would have required an expensive rebuild of the app from the ground up. Nonetheless, ibroadcast remains the only platform capable of synchronized streaming and social viewing of YouTube content in a legal manner and exists to this day as a free community product enjoyed by artists and their fans from every country that has Internet access. The original use case was validated via the unit test suite which programmatically verified the progress towards the goal. That test case has been removed - today, the original co-founder / couple are simply good friends who are proud of what they accomplished under their leadership of ibroadcast tv Inc. She hangs out in her channel with guys she is getting to know, and proudly displays Ibby - the exotic lizard who was first a corporate mascot and later became a beloved house pet. And I hang out in mine, to surprise a remarkably talented and beautiful woman whom I just met by playing her a video of her own! It just about bankrupted me, and the relationship came to an end. But was it worth it? Hell yeah. I started out a lost soul with a programming job in the five figures, and a spotty relationship history. Today, about a year after officially throwing in the towel, almost 4 years since inception, I'm making twice that in an uber high profile job managing teams that build enterprise apps for Apple devices that you don't even know exist yet. I had my first mature and truly serious relationship, and in doing so, I truly grew up. And not only did I advance my career, I advanced my knowledge... The new venture I'm working on is one that can be built and launched by myself with no expenses, while keeping the day job... And version 1 has no server costs, therefore no scaling costs. This is the very condensed story of ibroadcast. And it is a cautionary tale regarding the use of powerful psychedelics such as mushrooms. For me it was just what I needed. But think about it... Going from a normal predictable if boring life to one where you start a startup, quit the day job, get in a relationship, make the gf your cofounder, raise the initial seed round from the gf, raise real money together from an investor, ride off into the sunset, raise big money, blow 10k of it on Hawaii and start ww3 with the investor, get separated thru deportation, have to make a Faustian bargain with a pornograhper to stay alive breakup for awhile, get back together, fail in the name of future marriage and family, adjust back to civilian employed life... And after all that, break up and be single, In my case it was way better than the alternative. I learned more com sic than a cs major and more business than an mba and I also learned how to wash dishes! But if you've already got stability, money, family... Seriously think twice about taking shrooms. Not about starting a startup, because if you do it in normal circus it will be balanced. But if you are motivated by divine, mushroom inspired revelation... Watch out. To launch immersively, as I did, and as is the only way to launch a viral app with no immediate revenue model is to condemn oneself to an eternity on a rowboat between Scylla and Charybdis. Let the wind be calm... Until you meet with Kleiner Perkins!!
